TOPIC:

City of Milwaukee’s Water Centric City Initiative

SUMMARY: 

The City of Milwaukee’s sustainability plan – ReFresh Milwaukee – sets out goals for the city around water. One of these goals is to establish Milwaukee as America’s Water Centric City.

The City of Milwaukee’s Environmental Collaboration Office (ECO) is launching the new Water Centric City initiative by celebrating Water Week from March 20-24, 2017, coinciding with the United Nations’ World Water Day on March 22.

Every day during Water Week, ECO is partnering with amazing water organizations based in Milwaukee to showcase all of the local public, private, and non-profit efforts making Milwaukee a Water Centric City.

Come learn about the free public events planned for Water Week and how Milwaukee is thinking globally but acting locally to become America’s Water Centric City!

Water Week Events

Monday: Milwaukee’s Harbor District Open House with Sweet Water and Harbor District Inc.

Tuesday: Green Infrastructure Talk and Lunch with Stormwater Solutions Engineering & MMSD

Wednesday: Milwaukee Water Bus Tour with John Gurda (small fee)

Thursday: Hike Along the MKE River with River Revitalization Foundation and Milwaukee Riverkeeper

Friday: Milwaukee Water Social with Mayor Barrett at Good City Brewing

SPEAKER BIO:

Erick Shambarger is the Director of Environmental Sustainability at the City of Milwaukee, where he leads the Environmental Collaboration Office (ECO).  ECO was created by Mayor Tom Barrett to develop practical solutions that benefit Milwaukee’s environment and economy. Mr. Shambarger developed the Milwaukee Energy Efficiency (Me2) program and PACE financing program.  He developed the Milwaukee Better Buildings Challenge program, chaired the City’s Energy Reduction Team to reduce energy use across City operations, and promotes innovative storm water management practices and green infrastructure. He oversees implementation of ECO programs and the ReFresh Milwaukee sustainability plan. He also leads ECO’s involvement in national and global partnerships.  Prior to his current role, he served as Deputy Director of ECO for 5 years, and as City Economist in the Budget and Management Division before that.  He holds a Masters of Public Affairs degree from the University of Wisconsin and certificates in Water Technology and Energy Analysis and Policy.

The “Brewery” was recently awarded LEED-ND Platinum, making it one of the greenest neighborhood developments in the US. http://www.bestplacemilwaukee.com/

Parking: There is free two-hour street parking until 9pm in front of the building, or metered parking on 8th Street and 10th Street. Caution: they do ticket in the evening here. Alternatively, the parking structure across the street offers parking at $0.75/hour.

SPEAKER: Gigi Pomerantz, Founder and Executive Director of Youthaiti

TOPIC: More Cellphones Than Toilets

2.6 billion people in the world live without access to a toilet. about 7 million of them are in Haiti. Hear what one local woman is doing to try to change that. Youthaiti is a Milwaukee based organization dedicated to helping and encouraging Haitian people in their development of ecological projects in sanitation and water-source protection, community gardening and reforestation in their own communities.

Bio: Gigi Pomerantz is Executive Director of Youthaiti, a Milwaukee-based non-profit that does Ecological Sanitation and sustainable agricultural development in rural Haiti. A Family Nurse practitioner at Aurora Sinai for over 30 years, Gigi first traveled to Haiti on a medical mission in 2006. The impact of the lack of sanitation on the health of the people changed her life.

Topic:  Because Water Doesn’t Grow on Trees: H2Oscore and the Future of Water

McGee Young is the Founder of H2Oscore and an Associate Professor of Political Science at Marquette University. He will talk about how his company is changing the way communities use water, the limits of conservation as a paradigm for water management, and opportunities for innovations in the water sector. H2Oscore was accepted into the charter class of the Global Freshwater Seed Accelerator and won the Midwest Social Innovation prize. In October, Milwaukee became the fourth city to contract with H2Oscore to provide all residents with online access to their water use and rewards at local small businesses for water conservation.  http://www.h2oscore.com

Milwaukee: On the path towards being a “City of the Future”

At the request of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the White House Council on Environmental Quality, MMSD Executive Director and our next Green Drinks speaker Kevin Shafer led a discussion of financing so-called green infrastructure —  green and permeable landscapes — at a White House conference on municipal storm water in 2012. Kevin  has also been honored with an appointment to a national advisory panel serving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The committee is chartered to advise the EPA on multiple issues. Among them are: regulatory innovation and reform; environmental protection tools; pollution prevention; new technologies; and appropriate roles of all levels of government in environmental management. His intriguing topic will be:Milwaukee: On the path towards being a “City of the Future”.
