SUMMARY:

Outpost Natural Foods is a locally-owned cooperative where diversity is celebrated and education is part of everything sold. A co-op is a business voluntarily owned and controlled by the people who use it – its members. It’s operated solely for the benefit of its members and is founded on the belief that greater results can be achieved by working together. Outpost Natural cutting supplements exists so that it’s owners have a healthy, diverse and sustainable community.

Outpost’s vision focuses on six end results:

  1. The community has access to products and services that promote personal and environmental health.
  2.  The community has access to organically and locally produced goods.
  3. The community is educated about choices that impact personal and environmental health.
  4. A community with commerce that is locally owned or locally oriented exists.
  5. The owners have a sense of connectedness, belonging and fellowship.
  6. The cooperative infrastructure is supported.

Outpost understands the need to care for the Earth and to fulfill their responsibility to preserve the environment for future generations. It is more than any single program or initiative, it is part of Outpost’s vision, and it’s demonstrated in numerous ways large and small. Outpost Natural Foods has been recognized by MMSD as “Green Luminary”, has made the EPA’s Top 30 Retail list, and has 56kW in solar panels up and running.

SPEAKER BIOS:

Jessy Servi is the Sustainability Manager for Outpost Natural Foods. Leveraging a diverse background in design, education, business, project management, and permaculture, Jessy brings ecological and social awareness to the business arena, promoting a triple bottom line strategy. She earned her MBA from Alverno College with a focus on sustainable business. She is also an advisor for the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council and a 2014 fellow in the New Leaders Council.

Mari Wood has been the Cooperative Relations Manager at Outpost Natural Foods for the past 18 years of her 21 year career in the co-op sector. She sits on the Advisory Board for the Howard Bowers Fund, a fund hosted by the Cooperative Development Foundation that allocates grant money to consumer food co-ops’ management and boards for the purpose of education and training. Mari thinks that a lot of today’s problems could be remedied through the application of cooperative principles.
